Hello Friends!

My name is Cara Pratt and I am the Rush Chair! I hail from the great city of Kenosha, WI (The 4th Largest City in Wisconsin!!!!). I am a first-year Environmental Policy, International Relations, and Environmental Science major. I joined last fall, reppin' the Xi Krenek pledge class...woot. Basically, I think APO is the coolest thing ever - great service. great people. I am also involved in Crawford's EC as Co-Environmental Chair, DEAL, and some other great stuff. :)

Introductions: Sarah Tucker - Membership & Alumni VP

Hey everyone!

My name is Sarah and I am the Membership & Alumni VP of 2009. This is my third semester of APO and it is one of my favorite things about being here at Drake. I pledged spring semester of 2008 so I was part of the Nu Barasch pledge class. I am SO excited to be a part of EC this year and can't wait for all the fun things to come! A little bit about my life outside of APO...I'm from Hoffman Estates, IL and came to Drake to be a secondary education and mathematics double major. I'm really excited about teaching high school. I am currently a sophomore, am also involved in DEA and U.G.A.N.D.A Youth, and I work at the bookstore.
I can't wait to become closer with the chapter and get to know all the new pledges
:]
LFS,
Sarah

Introductions: Becca Lee - Treasurer

Hey there!

My name is Becca, and I am treasurer for the Omega chapter for 2009. I am a junior English and Secondary Education double major from Kansas City, MO. I didn't pledge until last fall, but now that I'm involved I am so glad to be a part of something so great. I love the service we do, and being around others who are excited to do some good in the world. Joining has definitely been one of the best things I've done since I came to Drake - it's awesome! Anyway, I look forward to everything we have planned for the spring and getting to know our new pledges! It's going to be a great semester!

LFS,
Becca

Five reasons to go to Boston

In December, APO had its national convention in Boston. Each chapter was invited to make a short video about themselves which was showed during the "roll call" portion of the opening banquet. Check out the video we made!

Introductions: Meagan Savage - President

Hey, everybody!

I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Meagan Savage, I'm a junior magazine major and I'm the chapter president. I previously served as the chapter secretary and service vice presidnet. I pledged APO in the Spring of 2007 when I was a freshman (so this is my fifth semester in the chapter) and have absolutely loved being involved with it. My favorite part about being in the chapter is getting out in the community and doing service. Especially when I was a freshman, it was a great way to get out in the surrounding area when I didn't have a car, spend time with my fellow brothers, and help members of the community. To this day I still love doing service. Some of my favorite service events I've done are Habitat for Humanity, Jolly Holiday Lights (benefiting Make-A-Wish), Kids Fest, and Night Eyes at the Blank Park Zoo. I'm kind of the main blog moderator type of person, but you'll be able to hear from plenty of other brothers about who we are and what we do. We'll also be sure to post pictures.

Thanks for reading!

Meagan

Way back in the day

I have my own blog through Drake's marketing department and I wanted to re-post this particular blog entry here. It's from two years ago which is I when I pledged APO. It talks a bit about what I wanted to get out of it and why I decided to do it.

The whole Greek system thing never really interested me. My roommate rushed and she's now a Kappa Alpha Theta and loves it more than life itself. Personally, I found the strict rules of rushing a little too ridiculous and I really didn't feel like getting dressed up to be judged by a whole bunch of girls I didn't know. But, that's just me. Sororities and fraternities definitely offer great academic, social and service opportunities for their members, but it didn't really appeal to me.

What did appeal to me was APO. It's a co-ed service fraternity on campus which basically does a whole lot of community service types of activities. There's no house and it's super low-key and best of all, not very expensive.

Soon, most of the girls I live with will be gone every weekend with the crew team and I don't want to spend spring semester all by myself. I decided to pledge APO because I love participating in community service projects and I really wanted to meet other people. And, obviously everybody I've met so far is really nice (or else they wouldn't care enough to do community service) and I'm really excited for initiation. I thought it would be a really cool way to get involved on campus and enjoy myself all at the same time.

Since APO is a fraternity, once I'm initiated I'll be a "brother" and I'll have a pledge "dad," even though "he" might very well be a she. Even though I pointedly decided not to become involved with a social sorority, I must admit that when my roommate comes home from having real food at the Theta house or from a long night of games and movies, it kind of makes me jealous that she has this whole other community that she's a part of and I'm hoping I can find something similar to what she has with APO.

Plus, I'm drawn to the fact that it's a co-ed organization... if you know what I mean. :)

APO Sectionals

This past weekend Drake hosted the APO Section 21 Conference and it was amazing. A lot of chapters from the rest of the state were invited down to Drake to participate in worshops and lectures and all sorts of things like that. I haven't been in the chapter very long at all so this was my first large APO gathering with other chapters, and I'm tellin' you I'd do it again in a heartbeat

On Friday night, we hosted a fellowship event in one of the academic buildings. We watched a movie on the projector and played charades. In case you're curious, my team won. Go, red team!! We had some pretty interesting drawings and some even more impressive guesses. My RA recently joined APO at Iowa State (she's a grad student there) and she was an amazing guesser... I mean, she guessed "fern." Fern, I tell you. I guess you had to be there.

All day Saturday we had workshops and things we could do with our brothers from other chapters. I spent the entire day at the roundtable discussions because they were REALLY interesting. A bunch of people from a bunch of chapters sat around and talked about how they run their chapter. We talked about everything from the recruiting process to what we do for service events. It's really amazing to see how different each chapter is despite being apart of the same organization. It was also really fun because we were able to bounce ideas off one another and talk about what worked for each of us and what didn't. I thought it was really beneficial - even if all the topics that we discussed didn't apply to me or my position on the Executive Committee.

The day ended with our formal banquet/dance which was great fun and kinda bittersweet ("kinda" is actually a gross understatement). I think it went really well and was a great end to sectionals. Everybody really seemed to enjoy theirselves. Personally, I'm not much of a dancer. I'll do "Shout," "YMCA," "The Electric Slide," "The Macarena," "The Chicken Dance," and things like that, but generally speaking I feel uncomfortably self-concious (isn't that redundant?) and awkward when dancing. Me running around my room in my sweatpants, singing karaoke into my hairbrush when nobody is looking is a different story.... correction... when I THINK nobody is looking.

I took some pictures so check them out. I might be adding more when I steal some from facebook :)

That's my RA. She can bust a move. There's a YouTube video to prove it.

Speaking of busting a move, Ms. Julie was gettin' friendly with Ben, the president of the Iowa State chapter.

Ryan graciously moved the glass away from his face to let me take his picture. He, erm... "hurt his ankle" or something. I'm kidding, he really did hurt his ankle.

Mr. Mike... I suppose you could call him my other half. He is the other Service Vice President.

Julie and Ryan finger dancing. Finger dancing is where it's at, yo!
